As part of the cultural season of the Environmental Research Center

Dr. ABBAS J. KADHEM -head of the Sustainable Development Department-ERC presented a lecture on Wednesday, 3/1/2024 at 10:00 pm entitled (Climate Change in Iraq).

The lecture begins by defining the concept of climate change, emphasizing its significance as a phenomenon characterized by long-term shifts in weather conditions, leading to comprehensive environmental impacts. The focus is directed towards climate changes in Iraq, where there is a recorded increase in temperatures and fluctuations in precipitation patterns.

The lecture provides participants with an overview of the effects of these changes on the environment, such as a decline in water resources and negative impacts on agriculture and biodiversity. The speaker also discusses potential health effects, with a particular focus on the rise in temperatures and the impact on air quality and human health.

Attention is then turned to the future projections of the climate in Iraq, highlighting the importance and necessity of adapting to these changes. There is an emphasis on developing effective strategies to reduce carbon emissions and enhance adaptability to the expected impacts of climate change. The lecture concludes by calling for active engagement and motivation to bring about positive change in addressing these pressing environmental challenges.

Dr. Mukheled Amer Hussien-head of the Department of Environmental Pollution-ERC presented a lecture on Wednesday, 27/12/2023 at 10:00 pm entitled (Enhancement of Health and Safety Concepts in Laboratory Working Environment: A Field Experience at a British University). The lecturer stated, through his gained experience during three years of continuously laboratory work in completing his PhD study in the University of Bath-Chemical Engineering Department-UK, implemented training courses and guidebooks of the department, the concepts of health and safety are a principal requirement as a higher policy that is approved and applied from the university level down to the various departments in any faculty or school. Vice versa based on this policy, the policy of any department in any faculty or school will essentially reflect that policy in its general lines. The department adopts the policy of health and safety, and works to provide all necessary support for its implementation that ensures the safety for all workers in the department including the students of UG and PG (MSc and PhD), post-doctoral, faculty members, technical staff, administrative staff, visitors and others.

Given the collaborative role of the Environment Research Centre with different governmental sectors, a joint meeting between head of Environment Research Center with Minister of Environment and ministerial advisory team was held in 13 December 2023.

A healthy debate about the Center mission, goals and activities was discussed during the meeting.

For more efficient collaboration, prof. Zainab B. Mohammed, as head of Environment Research Center, expressed her priority to increase the scientific contributions with both governmental and nongovernmental sectors through agree memorandums of understanding particularly those related to the environment protection and sustainable development.
