Under the guidance of the President of University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Amin D. Thamer, Environmental Research Center organized the symposium entitled "Water Scarcity in Iraq “Current and Future Solutions” on Thursday, 15 March 2018. The seminar included an overview of the vision of the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Planning in addition to present some of the experiments and scientific researches relevant, implemented by the University of Technology, and after the discussion, several recommendations have been suggested:

First: Public administration and strategic planning
1. Adopting a unified water management policy in Iraq through the formation of a Higher Water Council or a joint working team and with the participation of all relevant parties; Adopting the development of strategic plans for water management and its relationship with industrial, agricultural and service activities in Iraq.
2. To investigate international and national reports and research related to water, both in Iraq and upstream countries, and to establish an archive of its own under the supervision of the competent authority to manage the water and update the water database in light of the developments mentioned in these reports and research.
3. Follow-up to those responsible for polluting and accounting for water and imposing appropriate restrictions on its activities.
4. Emphasize the need to provide the appropriate government budget to ensure that the plight of water scarcity and future risks are overcome.
5 - Enable the cadres of water management scientifically and attention to equipment and irrigation systems and rely on national cadres in the development.

Second: Support for sustainable agriculture
1. Emphasize the importance of water in enhancing food security and the need to adopt innovative irrigation methods in agriculture.
2. Establishing an agricultural map for Iraq showing the suitable agricultural crops according to the availability of water and irrigation systems currently available and the need to modernize with the development of technologies and expansion of irrigation networks.


Third: External water policy
1. Convening water-related conferences, seminars and events in Iraq, inviting non-governmental organizations operating in upstream countries (Turkey and Iran), and demonstrating the impact of water scarcity in Iraq on regional peace and calling on them to put pressure on their governments to ensure the continued work of international instruments on water and riparian states.

Fourth: National security measures
1. Preparing an extensive study of potential water scarcity scenarios that will determine the role of security services, the military, community outreach centers and local governments in addressing the outcomes of each scene.

Fifth: Awareness and community participation
1. Intensify water awareness programs and promote sustainable water consumption in individual practices and public uses.

Sixth: Legislation and laws
1. Introduce the executive laws guaranteeing the legalization of water use and emphasizing the role of raising the wages of water use in rationing its consumption while taking into consideration the harm to the poor and the most vulnerable groups in society.

Seventh: Research and Studies
1. Cooperation between the ministries related to water policy and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to activate the scientific research in the real problems related to the work and to find solutions and solutions and timely adaptation to future crises in the field of water.

Eighth: Domestic investment in innovation and modern technologies
1. Instructing the Technological Incubator at the University of Technology in coordination with scientific departments, scientific research centers, training center and laboratories to communicate with the Ministry of Agriculture and contracting with them to design and produce some irrigation and drip irrigation system requirements and modern techniques that improve the efficiency of agricultural production and sustainable water consumption

 

In continuation of the work of the Joint Working Group between the Environmental Research Center at the University of Technology and the Ministry of Water Resources, which is responsible for the preparation of an "Evaluation Study for the Community Management of Nile Flower Plants in Iraq" and "Guidance Guide for Sustainable Management of the Bio-Nile System of the Nile" On 21 and 22 February 2018.

The workshops were designed to answer those present about the benefits and disadvantages of the presence of the Nile Flower plant, how to maximize these benefits and reduce the damage, and ways to generalize these procedures at the regional and national levels. The workshop was attended by elites from the sectors of work, society, civil society organizations, volunteers and media from the governorates where the plant is located. The workshop was conducted by the Environmental Research Center, while the Ministry of Water Resources provided logistical support. The two workshops came out with a number of important recommendations that will be prepared and presented to Ministry of Water Resources officials for appropriate decisions.

 

Among the activities of the cultural season of our center, Engineer Ahmad Natiq Ghazi gave a seminar entitled "Alternatives to renewable energy sources" on Monday, 5/3/2018 on the blue hall in the center, where he summarized his lecture as follows:

Coal, natural gas and oil are among the worst sources of energy. They fill our atmosphere with toxic gases and directly and negatively affect the Earth's climate, as well as its non-sustainability. Renewable sources such as wind and water turbines, solar panels and nuclear reactors, although they are clean and renewable sources of energy, have several disadvantages in terms of cost and effectiveness. Scientists are developing new designs for renewable energy sources that are more efficient, efficient and less expensive than traditional sources of renewable energy. These alternatives are applied in some countries of the developed world and have proved effective in the production of electricity, so we hope to expand the scope of these sources all over the world and rely entirely on the production of clean or alternative electricity.
